The first year program focuses on psychological concepts and interventions drawn from psychoanalysis, family systems theory, attachment theory and recent findings in interpersonal neuroscience. Classes focus on: evaluating and formulating cases; developmental issues in couples; transference and countertransference in couple therapy; projective identification in couples; making therapeutic choices; therapeutic action in couple therapy; assessing and treating sexual problems; affect regulation in couple therapy, and addressing "isms" and microaggressions with interracial couples.
